These feelings about questioning the church had been building since the previous century, as the spirit of intellectual inquiry was one of the chief legacies of the Renaissance. The 16th Century became known as the Protestant Reformation, and was initially a movement aimed at reforming the beliefs and practices of the Roman Catholic Church; however, in the end it led to a division among the church and created quite an impact on a whole host of social aspects among Europeans. Even in the most difficult conflicts, we are never without hope â€Å"The war is over. Once more we can be friends.† Is what the women in the Sumatra camp in the movie ‘Paradise Road’ thought they would never live to hear. Though they were in the presence of conflict, distress, and pure evil for such a long time, a majority of them never lost hope even in the most difficult conflicts and lived to see the day when they were finally set free. Whilst some characters such as Rosemary, whom was confronted with conflict, lost all hope and as a result perished in her misery. In a wider social context there are many cases of women who were prisoners during war who got through by grasping onto something which gave them hope, one of these women is known†¦show more content†¦In the dictionary hope is defined as ‘A feeling of expectation and desire for a certain thing to happen.’ In my own words hope is something everybody needs in order to pull through tough times, it’s something that is needed to survive. I believe that everybody has hope but not everyone can find it and sometimes it can be too late. To say we are never without hope would be true in the sense that everybody does have hope, whether that be unrevealed or exposed. Therefore it doesn’t always necessarily shine during the most difficult conflicts, leaving the prompt restricted. I know within myself that there were times where I almost gave up. My dad was rushed into surgery a year or so ago with a brain tumour, at first the haste of the situation didn’t give me any time to think. There was a high chance of losing him on the operating table and I felt as though I had lost all hope within myself. I knew that I had to find hope so I gave myself time to think, realising that my dad is the strongest person I know and he has never lost a fight in his life, so why would it happen now? I had found my hope in a time of conflict and it helped me get through. The question I continue to ask myself is ‘where would I be at this point in time if I didn’t discover that hope?’ I know of a girl who wasn’t as lucky as I was when it came to finding her inner hope. She lived alone with her single mother and her mother become very ill with cancer.

Sarah Woodruff is different from other characters in The French Lieutenant’s Woman because she is epistemologically unique and because the narrator does not have access to her inner thoughts: in chapter 13 the author directly addresses the reader and states that he gives his characters the free will to determine their outcome in his novel. In a typical Victorian context, the protagonist’s inner conflict and motives would be exposed to the reader. Fowles denies his right as the author to impose definition of characters and in this way recognises â€Å"the age of Alain-Robbe Grillet and Roland Barthes† in bringing about the â€Å"death of the author† and the birth of the â€Å"reader†. The reader must interpret the text in ways (s)he views it and is forced to actively engage in the text. Fowles also introduces the author as a god-like figure (who turns back time) to craft multiple endings. He (the author) allows Sarah to act in an existentialist way to determine her outcome in the novel. It allows her to exercise her individuality, making her stand as a lone feminist figure amongst the tides of Victorian conventionality. The novel rewrites Victorian sexuality and in this way is an example of the way the sexual revolution of the 1960s is described in the historical novel of its time. Foucault described the Victorian period as the â€Å"golden age of repression† and he revises the notion that the Victorian era was silent on sexual matters in his works. Both Foucault and The French Lieutenant’s Woman claim that the forms of power and resistance are historically conditioned. For example, Sarah’s body is still institutionalised at the end of the novel since she appears only as a minor character in Rosetti’s house. The fact that Sarah is an anachronistic creation points to the idea that the novel is not about the Victorian era but a critique of relative values in their context. The metafictional structure of the novel successfully elucidates that Sarah seems to be subordinated in the patriarchal power of the contemporary narrator- it also endeavours to show that even the most emancipated groups during the Victorian period could not carry the liberation of women completely. This is a reflexion of what Fowles deems backward in the context of his society, and is apparent in Sarah’s repressed sexuality; and the blatant disparity regarding notions of female sexuality: Ernestina is always confined within the strict boundaries of patriarchal, societal convention- this is shown by the way she represses her sexual desire for Charles, being content with the most â€Å"chaste of kisses†. In this way the novel represents the truth as a form of pleasure in a Foucauldian sense. The institutionalisation of prostitutes, a somewhat clandestine pastime for Victorian gentlemen, is a situation that reflects the obvious hypocrisy of Victorian society when compared to Sarah’s situation. She (Sarah) is labelled a â€Å"fallen women† (hence her nickname â€Å"Tragedy†) and is ostracised because of her free-will and â€Å"feminine misconduct†. Charles finds her forwardness rather intimidating as it goes against his beliefs that the stratification of society is a vital element of social stability. This enforces Charles’ Darwinian beliefs about the social hierarchy (in reference to Social Darwinism). Darwinian evolution finds its expression by creating a new way of thinking. Fowles’ novel represents the great crisis of Darwinian Victorian England and traces its impact on society. Charles questions his religion in the Church, admitting he is agnostic, and the narrator himself labels Charles as having agnostic qualities. At the end of the novel Charles has become a â€Å"modern man† and Sarah the â€Å"hopeful monster† who feels alienated in Victorian culture without being able to conceptualise Charles’ intuitive understanding of her otherness and modernity. Darwinian evolution and nineteenth century psychology are portrayed in The French Lieutenant’s Woman as providing a corrective culture dominated by narrow minded Evangelicalism. Examples can be observed in Mrs Poulteney’s fickle attempts at being charitable, her dismissive attitude towards her duty to the church which is merely a habitual pastime for her, and her decision to dismiss Sarah. Then novel’s intertextuality is made up of its bricolage of history and fiction. Victorian epigraphs (and the irony used in them) serve to reconstruct the cultural milieu of the age using representations of facets of its literary world through the poetry of Hardy, Tennyson, Arnold and Clough. It provides a context within which the characters try to construct their subjectivities where they can emancipate themselves from the novel’s dominant ideology (this is an example of how Freud’s ideas about literature’s subjectivity are utilised). Also, the footnotes reinforce the author’s presence and allude to the fact that the author is omnipresent (in the novel). The alternative endings represent two types of Victorian endings and the last, a more postmodern, existentialist one. Fowles’ plays with different endings to epitomise the early postmodernist problem of artistic form and representation and this technique agrees with Umberto Eco’s idea that literature has openness and can be interpreted in many ways. The use of the existentialist theme in The French Lieutenant’s Woman makes the reader aware of Sartrean-style thinking which was not in existence in Victorian times but was conceptualised in Fowles’ era. It is successful in allowing the reader to criticise and contrast the differing ideologies present at the respective times and, by highlighting the shift in values, Fowles effectively expounds a new way of thinking. Fowles successfully blends the Victorian novel with postmodern ideologies and twentieth century sensibility by applying paradigms which lead to the reader being allowed to question previously held values, in particular relative values which change according to context, such as sexuality and religion. Through his pastiche of traditional Victorian romance, and historical narrative Fowles deconstructs his novel and makes the reader aware of contextual codes and conventions through ironic, metafictional comments: â€Å"Perhaps it is only a game†¦. The Filipinos also established the first Republic of the Philippines under the first constitution in the history of Asia. The colonization of the Philippines by the Americans drew worldwide attention. Consequently, Japan and Asia came in and pressured the Americans to grant the Philippines independence (Solheim 102). Quezon became the first president of the Philippines in November 1935. It did not take a long time before the Second World War began. In 1941, Japanese troops invaded the Philippines islands add in defense, McArthur scattered 80,000 troops in the Philippines to fight against the Japanese and prevent their entrance into the islands (Ganzon 96). Due to lack of reinforcement of the troops, the Japanese captured the islands and drove McArthur out of the Philippines. The Japanese demanded that the Filipinos should surrender. However, several soldiers and the guerilla resistance movement declined. The Japanese sent President Quezon to exile. While in exile, Quezon set up a government and after his death in 1944, his vice-president, Sergio Osmena, succeeded him. Nevertheless, on his return to the Philippines, Quezon led the first liberation forces to fight against the Japanese. He led in the formation of the Philippine government. Later on, the Philippine began the battle of the Leyte Gulf, which is the greatest naval engagement in History. This battle caused the destruction of the Japanese troops leaving 425,000 Japanese dead. It led to the freedom of all the Philippine islands (Legarda 92). In 1945, McArthur declared the freedom of all the Philippines. The newly formed government embarked on reviving the nation’s economy. Conclusion The Filipinos faced a lengthy period of captivity in the hands of other nations but they eventually got their freedom. The way that she is peeping herself busy by doing all the cooking and making preparations for his departure is one aspect of how she truly cares for Benjamin. Her list of what she has to do is also a way of to keep her mind off of what will be happening to Benjamin or at least a way to hold back her emotions. This is further expressed by the way Benjamin is watching her carefully, looking for any sign of disturbance or hurt. Fosters idea of eating in this particular scene is seen through the way emotions are expressed through Benjamin and Fields actions : Once Petrus finally arrives Fielas heat is racing, and she rushes Master Petrus into giving him answers quickly as she wants to know what is going on. However Master Petrus has bad news, and he tells Fiela that he is sure that Benjamin is with his real parents, and he tries to persuade Fiela of this. However Fiela starts becoming angry and Master Petrus tries to convince Fiela to let the issue rest, however he achieves nothing doing so. The next day a constable comes from the magistrate giving Fiela the message that if she makes any more trouble, then she will be in trouble. The main themes in this chapter are anger and fear. Fiela is very angry with Master Petrus, as she expected that he would be able to do something that would help her. Fiela is also mad at the magistrate, as she feels that it is unfair that her child was taken away from her. Fiela is also scared, she is scared that she will never see one of her children again. Fiela is also scared for Benjamin as she dosent know how he is being treated or where he even is.  There was a major change in conflict in this scene compared to chapter 15 were Master Petrus promises to try and do something for Benjamin. At first Fiela was very happy and optimistic, however now she is angry, sad and disappointed. My personal response to this chapter of the book is that the chapter was really good. I like the way Fielas hopes to get her son back were rejected. I like this because now I believe that Fiela will continue fighting for her child. Fielas struggles to get Benjamin back make the book very interesting. I think that the chapter was also written very well as the action builds up and then we find out that Master Petrus couldnt get Benjamin back. Quote  She was torn by worry and anger. Benjamin is no longer a child, hell know whats happened to him! Hell understand. I have to go to him to explain to him how the minds of mad people work! I have to go and tell him!  This quote shows us that Fiela dosent accept the news that Master Petrus gave her. This probably means that Fiela will continue fighting for her child.

Music, opera, art, architecture, uniforms, badges, flags, exhibitions, film, literature, education and parades were all used as communications tools in order to sell a political ideology). We find similar examples in the former Soviet Union and in todays North Korea. However, increasing need and opportunities to reach the single individual consumer, buyer, guest, client, visitor, patient or voter, leads to the search for more sophisticated and in several situations critical tools. It is of utmost importance to widen the methodo logical perspective and take into consideration tools of particular interest in a one-to-one marketing perspective. The numerous tools and the uncountable possible combinations illustrate the complexity of IMC and that decisions concerning IMC is a strategic issue mainly consisting of principals and guidelines rather than instructions on a tactical level, mostly handled by advertising agencies (Schroeder, 2002; Percy et al., 2002) and account executives. Also on a macro level, we can distinguish three factors which have fundamentally changed the conditions for IMC; deregulations of markets, globalization of the economy and individualization of the consumption. The emergence of new information technology can be considered as the dominating underlying factor. Communication has always been built upon three different systems sound, image and writing. All these systems have been depending on technological development. Up till now no technology has been able to transmit all systems, at t he most two. Gutenberg produced writing and image. Sound film came 1929, based on sound technology and photography. The numeric revolution handle the three systems and has become a fourth system, the digital system which itself has had tremendous economic and social consequences. Previously, the three communication systems were separate. The IT-revolution has made a total communicative integration possible, which in its turn has changed business structures. Three large business areas are now integrated: telephony, television and the computer industry. The importance of specialization has decreased and differences between previously separate cultures as publishing, film industry and music industry have diminished. Fusions have brought the three spheres together and they have become the heavy industry of our time. The development of the industrial revolution took around 200 years. The new technology has reached practically all over the world in 20 years. However, communication remains as one of the most human of activities. We can, again, define communication as a transactional process between two or more parties whereby meaning is exchanged through the intentional use of symbols (Engel et al., 1994). Notice the key elements: communication is intentional; a deliberate effort is made to bring about a response. It is a transaction and the participants are all involved in the process and it is symbolic where words, pictures, music and other stimulants are used to convey thoughts (Blythe, 2000). Computer-based systems have revolutionized communications. Computer-based communications include data based systems and web sites. We can argue that technological development has put good old days far behind. The competitive arena of today bears little resemblance to that of the mid-1990s (Blythe, 2000, p.10). Non-differentiated mass markets rarely exist today. A number of factors have emerged and interact in such a way that the environment for c ommunication strategy is radically changed. Engel et al. (1994) claimed that appealing to unidentified individuals in a mass market is increasingly becoming a dead end. One fundamental consequence is that the traditional emphasis on heavyweight mass communication campaigns (so-called above-the-line), has been replaced by more direct and highly targeted promotional activities using direct marketing and other tools aimed to reach the smallest of all target groups, the single individual. Conclusions The primary goal of IMC is to affect the perception of value and behavior through directed communication. The development and diffusion of IMC is closely associated with fast technological advancement and of a rapidly globalizing and deregulations of markets and individualization of consumption patterns. This has emphasized the need to adjust objectives and strategies to changing marketing and communication realities. In the rapidly changing and highly competitive world of the twenty-first century only strategically oriented IMC can help business to move forward. However, Kitchen and Schultz (2000) have found that a majority of firms have remained on a level mainly dealing with tactical coordination of promotional elements and that very few, a handful in todays world, have moved to financial and strategic integration. We can assume that the theoretical and methodological perspectives and frameworks are influenced by educational background and tradition. On a tactical level marketing, communication is handled by professionally skilled account executives, art directors and copy directors with very limited competence and experience from strategic management. A study of the current educational program, specially designed for management on strategic level, shows that communication theory and methodology takes up approximately 3 percent of total time. The rest of the time is devoted to strategic planning, applied management, financial analysis, marketing, politics and economics. This educational structure has remained during at least the last two decades. A main conclusion we can draw is that those who have strategic and tactic responsibility for IMC live in separate educational, cultural, intellectual and empirical spheres. Those responsible for strategic management decisions possess, at the best, strategic management ability but lack insight and awareness concerning communication theory and method. And those professionally skilled in communication lack relevant skills concerning strategic management, theoretically and empirically. If we imagine these two spheres as areas, we can easily notice that the intersection field is very small. A study of relevant literature published during the 1990s shows that a simplified theoretical perspective on communication as process oriented, sequential and linear is dominating 70-80 percent of the books, thereby overlooking the complexity of communication. Different educational cultures might be an essential obstacle to move IMC from tactics to strategy. A study of leading Swedish schools and institutes in the fields of management shows that approximately only 3 percent of total time is devoted to communication theory and methodology. The study also shows that the education programs of the leading marketing communications schools contain less than 10 percent of leadership and strategic management while more 90 percent is aimed at communication theory, various techniques, advertising, art, copy and account executive training. A concluding remark is that the concept of IMC is dominated by a simplified and insufficient theoretical perspective and handled by professionals with skills on a technical and tactical level. This indicates that there is a gap between two cultural, intellectual and empirical spheres. Opportunities for further research. Based on various researches by scholars in the field, I would encourage more research to be carried out in this aspect of marketing. It is a matter of common interest for academics, professional schools and practitioners on strategic and tactical levels to close the gap in order to move IMC from tactics to strategy.
